The Provincetown port guide

Table of Contents

Provincetown sits at the very tip of Cape Cod, and by road it is the end of a long drive down the Cape. By ferry it is a crossing of about an hour and a half from Boston or Plymouth, straight across the bay to MacMillan Pier, in the centre of town at the foot of Commercial Street.

The routes to Provincetown

Boston has the fast ferry of Boston Harbor City Cruises from Long Wharf, about 95 minutes, from 16 May to 12 October 2026, with a morning departure and extra early-afternoon sailings from Friday to Sunday in summer. See Boston - Provincetown.

Plymouth on the South Shore has Captain John Boats from Town Wharf, about 90 minutes, with a morning sailing out and an afternoon sailing back. See Plymouth - Provincetown.

MacMillan Pier

The pier is in the middle of the town's waterfront. Commercial Street, with the galleries, shops and restaurants, begins at its landward end, and the harbour beaches are a few minutes' walk in either direction. Both ferries use the pier, so check the signs for the Boston or the Plymouth boat when you go back.

Getting around

Provincetown is a walking and cycling town, and neither ferry carries cars. Bikes travel on a bike ticket on the Boston ferry; the dune and beach trails of the Cape Cod National Seashore begin a short ride from the pier.

Leaving Provincetown

The afternoon sailings back to Boston and Plymouth are in the timetable. In summer the return to Boston fills first, so book it together with the outbound.
