The Hyannis port guide
Table of Contents
Hyannis is the ferry port of Cape Cod. From Hyannis Harbor, Hy-Line Cruises sails the high-speed ferry to Nantucket year-round, and to Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard from May through October. The Steamship Authority's traditional ferry to Nantucket, the only one that carries cars, leaves from the neighbouring terminal on the same harbour.
The routes from Hyannis
Nantucket is the main route: about one hour, year-round, with upwards of nine departures a day in summer. See Hyannis - Nantucket.
Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard is the seasonal route, about an hour as well, from May through October with three to four sailings a day. See Hyannis - Oak Bluffs. Both islands are linked by Hy-Line's inter-island ferry, so a loop over both from Hyannis is possible.
The terminal
Hy-Line's terminal is at 220 Ocean Street, on the inner harbour a short walk south of Main Street. Check-in is at the terminal; Hy-Line asks you to arrive at least 45 minutes before departure. The Steamship Authority's terminal for the car ferry to Nantucket is on the same harbour.
Parking and shuttle
Hy-Line has parking at the terminal and an off-site lot at 183 Iyannough Road, about a mile from the pier, with an overflow lot at 33 Brooks Road. A free shuttle runs between the lots and the pier from 23 April to 25 October 2026 and again from 24 November to 7 December; allow 45 to 60 minutes before departure if you use it. Parking is paid per day, on-site more than off-site; the fees are on the prices page.
Getting to Hyannis
Hyannis lies on the south coast of the mid-Cape. From Boston and the north, the drive comes over the Sagamore Bridge and along the Cape; from Providence and the west over the Bourne Bridge. Both bridges carry the whole of the Cape's traffic, so allow time for the drive, especially on summer weekends and for the morning sailings.
Alternatives
For Nantucket from the eastern Cape, Freedom Cruise Line sails from Harwich Port in season. For Martha's Vineyard, the Island Queen from Falmouth is the shortest crossing, and the Steamship Authority's car ferries leave from Woods Hole.
