Nantucket is the outer of the two islands south of Cape Cod. Every ferry arrives in the harbour on the north shore, beside Nantucket town, so the town, the shops and the bike hire are on foot from the boat. Three passenger routes and one car ferry serve the island.
The routes to Nantucket
Hyannis is the year-round link: Hy-Line's high-speed ferry in about one hour, with upwards of nine departures a day in summer, and the Steamship Authority's traditional car ferry in about two hours and a quarter. See Hyannis - Nantucket.
Harwich Port on the eastern Cape has Freedom Cruise Line's fast ferry in under 80 minutes, from Memorial Day weekend to Columbus Day weekend, with a morning sailing out and an afternoon sailing back. See Harwich Port - Nantucket.
Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard is reached with Hy-Line's inter-island ferry, direct in about 70 minutes, three times a day in season. See Nantucket - Oak Bluffs.
The piers
The ferries use the wharves along the town waterfront. Freedom Cruise Line docks at Straight Wharf, at the foot of Main Street; Hy-Line's ferries from Hyannis and to Oak Bluffs, and the Steamship Authority's car ferry, dock on the same harbour front a few minutes' walk apart. Check your ticket for the pier of your return sailing.
Cars and bikes
Cars come to Nantucket only with the Steamship Authority, and only from Hyannis. The high-speed ferries carry bikes on a bike ticket, which is how most day visitors get beyond the town.
Leaving the island
Sailings back to Hyannis and Harwich Port, and the inter-island ferry to Oak Bluffs, are shown in the timetable. On summer afternoons the last sailings fill first, so book the return with the outbound.
