Nantucket: Hyannis or Harwich Port

Nantucket is the outer island, and the ferries to it leave from two ports. Hyannis is the main gateway: Hy-Line Cruises sails the high-speed ferry year-round in about an hour, and the Steamship Authority runs the traditional ferry, the only one that carries cars, in about two and a quarter hours. Harwich Port, further along the south coast, has Freedom Cruise Line's seasonal fast ferry to Straight Wharf in under 80 minutes, with free day parking at the harbour.

Martha's Vineyard: Falmouth, Hyannis or Woods Hole

The Vineyard is closer to the mainland, and the choice is about where you start. From Falmouth, the Island Queen crosses to Oak Bluffs in about 35 minutes, the shortest ferry ride on the Cape. From Hyannis, Hy-Line's high-speed ferry reaches Oak Bluffs in about an hour and lets you combine the Vineyard with Nantucket from one port. Woods Hole is the Steamship Authority's port, with the car ferries to Vineyard Haven year-round and to Oak Bluffs in season.

Between the islands

Hy-Line's inter-island ferry connects Nantucket and Oak Bluffs directly, without a stop on the mainland, in about 70 minutes. It is the way to see both islands on one trip, and it runs in the summer season with a handful of sailings a day.

Provincetown: from Boston or Plymouth

At the tip of the Cape, Provincetown is a 95-minute fast ferry from Boston's Long Wharf with Boston Harbor City Cruises, a much quicker way than the drive around Cape Cod Bay. From Plymouth, Captain John Boats sails to MacMillan Pier in about 90 minutes. Both ferries are seasonal, from spring to mid-October.

Before you travel

The Cape's ferry ports are reached by car over the Sagamore and Bourne bridges, so allow time for the drive. Every operator asks you to be at the pier well before departure, from 30 minutes with the Island Queen and Boston Harbor City Cruises to 45 minutes with Hy-Line. The port guides cover parking and shuttles, the timetable shows the departures for your date and the prices page compares the fares.
